Why a removalist could cost you $10,800

Why a removalist could cost you $10,800 | Removalists | Scoop.it

Moving to a new city is about to get a whole lot more expensive.

Unsuspecting Australians could soon find themselves falling foul of the Fair Work Ombudsman if they fail to pay the correct amount to their self-employed removalist under controversial new minimum pay rates.

Most of the focus has been on the devastating impact the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal’s order, now in effect after a failed court challenge from the trucking industry, will have on tens of thousands of owner-drivers around the country.

Under the Contractor Driver Minimum Payments Road Safety Remuneration Order 2016, or 2016 RSRO, self-employed “contractor drivers” including furniture removers and couriers must be paid according to a mind-bogglingly complex schedule of “safe rates”.

The Order applies to journeys longer than 500km, and journeys longer than 200km across state borders. That means someone hiring a removalist to haul their stuff from, for example, Canberra to Sydney, will need to become well acquainted withSchedule B of the 2016 RSRO.
